Hockey Victoria is proud to announce the 2013 inaugural Zone Challenge competition enabling all year round hockey development.
The Zone Challenge is a four round competition with no finals, running from October 18 until November 23. Teams from age groups under 12, 14 and 16 from all 10 zones will play each other once with the winner decided by points.
Victoria is the only hockey state to introduce this competition allowing players of all age groups the opportunity to play in a higher level of competition.
After reviewing the participation data off the back of the 2010, 2011 and 2012 G.J Gardner Homes Junior State Championships, Hockey Victoria identified that over 400 players (45 per cent) were playing in one year of the JSC and missing out on the next.
Hockey Victoria’s Zone Challenge will allow U12s to prepare for JSC U13 selection the following season and continue their player development pathway. Hockey Victoria will also be using the Zone Challenge competition as the final identification process for selection for the Under 15 representative state team in 2014.
All bottom age players selected in the JSC will receive automatic selection into the Zone Challenge teams. Bottom age players will receive notification of their opportunity on July 15 and must accept or decline their position in the squad or team by July 29.
Any other junior player registered with an association or club within one of the 10 zones will be able to nominate for the final trial.
